CAMPAIGN OPENED.

MOUNT ALBERT MAYORALTY,

MR. 11. A. ANDERSON SPEAKS.

The'achievements of the Mount Albert Borough Council during recent times were quoted by Mr. 11. A. Anderson in the opening address of his campaign for the mayoralty of Mount Albert last evening. The policy wh'ch had been followed during tl.r.t period, he said, would be continued under his guidance if he were ele.'S-J, and l>e w«.uld oppose any project that might result in an increase in the rates. A balanced budget would bo his objective each .year, and he would fight against the re-establisliment of a borough overdraft, an account which had been eliminated recently for the first time in many years.

Mr. Anderson, who is at present deputy-Mayor of the borough, is contesting the vacancy caused through the appointment of the Mayor, Mr. R. Ferner, to the magistracy, and also the vacancy on the Auckland Transport Board similarly caused. Mr. Anderson said he had been a member of the Mount Albert Council since September, 1933, and had been deputy-Mayor since May of last year. A ln March, 1934, ho had been' appointed chairman of the legal and finance committee, since when the council's finances had been restored to a satisfactory position and the rates had been reduced each year.

It was no mean achievement, lie said, that capital works carried out during the past three years, inducting the present year's commitments, were valued at £90,000, while all maintenance work had been effected to a satisfactory standard. There were now 2G£ miles of concrete footpaths and 8§ miles of bitumen carriageways in the 'borough, the major portion having been put down in the past three years.

Mr. Anderson offered himself as a trained business man for a seat on the Auckland Transport Board. Until Mr.Ferncr had won his scat last year Mount Albert had long been unrepresented on that body, and it was for Mount Albert residents to say whether that representation should continue.

At the conclusion of his address Mr. Anderson was accorded a vote of thanks and. confidence.
