MARTHA GOLD MINE.
UNIONISTS HOLD MEETINGS
GOVERNMENT PROPOSALS,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day.
; Following.a day of idleness yesterday as a protest against Saturday work and alterations made by tlie management of the Martha gold mine for the working of a 40-liour week, a mass meeting of all unions connected with the mining industry was held to-day under the auspi(»?s of the Ohinemuri Mines and Batteries Union to consider proposals from the Government.
The meeting openert at 10 a.m. but was adjouVned until 2 o'clock this afternoon. At 2.40 p.m. it was decided to adjourn further until 0 a.m. to-morrow. There was ■ a very large attendance of representatives "of all unions, the Academy Theatre being packed. Those present included the Hon. E. Dye and two inspectors of the Labour Department. A conference between Mr. Dye and the inspectors and the union executive was hold this morning and recommendations were submitted to tho mass meeting this afternoon. A conference will also bs held this afternoon between representatives of the Miners' Union and the Golden Dawn Gold Mining Company, Owliaroa, at Owharoa, relative to the recent dispute in connection with the proportion of mullock sent to the mill with broken ore. ' ' . Waihi is very quiet and orderly, and, visitors receive no impression of industrial trouble, beyond the increased number of men in the main, street of the town. . .
The mine whistle sounds at usual times.
