IN BAD WEATHER.
King's Yacht Damages Boats
In Greek Waters,
ROUGH SEAS ENCOUNTERED
(Received 10.30 a.m.)
LONDON, August 31
The Athens correspondent of the "Daily Mail" states that bad weather and rough seas made it necessary for the yacht Nahlin with King Edward on board, and her escort of Greek destroyers, to slow down. The King, in a wireless message, suggested to Athens that the escort should be withdrawn owing to the weather conditions. The destroyers consequently turned back.
A later cable message from Athens states that the Nahlin struck a bridge in Chalcis Strait, slight damage both to the yacht and bridge resulting. Heavy seas had caused the yacht to shelter in Karysto Bay, where it was too rough for official callers to get alongside.
The mishap was atributed to the strong current in the Strait, which is only 120 ft wide, swinging the yacht against a bridge, smashing three of the Nahlin's out-swung boats. The King watched the incident from the bridge of the yacht. '
The escorting destroyers, Glow Worm and Grafton, dashed ahead after the collision, their wash swamping a motor boat and capsizing two boatloads of sightseers, who were rescued uninjured.
