CONVERSION OF CAR.
OTAHUHU YOUTH CONVICTED. In the Police Court at Otahuhu yesterday, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., James Daniel Kerr, 19, a motor mechanic, was charged with unlawfully converting a car valued at £140 to his own use, failing to report an accident, negligent driving, and driving a vehicle having incorrect number plates affixed. Sergeant Cahill stated that defendant, who had been employed as an apprentice mechanic by Paine Bros., had unlawfully taken a car from his employers' garage and gone for a drive into Newmarket. On the return journey he had attempted to take a bend at 40 m.p.h., and had run into a post and damaged the car to the extent of £30. One of his companions had been injured and had to receive medical attention. Kerr failed to report the matter, but when approached the next day admitted everything. His employer was prepared to take him back, and his f?.iher was prepared to take over the liability for repairs. "It is a little different to 'he ordinary picking up of a car in the street," said Mr. Hunt, "but I am going to keep him off the road for a yea 1- " On the first charge he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within twelve months, on the second fined £2 plus costs 10/, and had his license cancelled for twelve months, on the third lie was convicted and discharged, and on the fourth he was discharged. ' The magistrate remarked that he ha.l made the penalties very light on amount of his fattier shoulderiiig the responsibilities for repairs.
