MARKET IMPROVES. GAS SHARES LOWER. I DOMINION BREWERIES FIRM. After a quiet commencement to the "week's business on 'Change there was a sharp spurt yesterday afternoon, and quite a substantial list of sales was put through before brokers closed for the day. At this morning's call there was less activity, but there 'were some bright spots in the bidding, and a fair turnover was recorded. Dominion Breweries continued recent firmness and touched a new high level, with business at £1 10/. More could have been placed at that figure, but sellers had retired to £1 10/6. The rights were to business from 6/ to 6/1. Auckland Gas shares were weak, and touched the lowest point in recent years with a sale at £1 3/, and a subsequent market between £1 2/10 and £1 3/3. The banking section was quiet and steady. New Zealand were quoted between £1 19/4 and £1 19/8, and Commercials from 18/4 to 18/5. Sanford shares again engaged attention. The ordinaries were on offer at 4/3 and no buyers, while the preferences had a market between 16/ and 19/6. New Zealand Newspapers had l ,lieir first sale since the capital repayment, a parcel changing hands at £1 17/6, with more wanted at that figure. G. J. Coles were steady between £3 19/6 and £4 1/, and Woolworths (Sydney) were weak, with sellers at £5 6/ and no buyers. A Smaller Turnover. There was a lack of interest in New Zealand securities at noon, and only a small list of sales, chiefly Australian scrip, was put through. Union Banks improved 6d, and other banks were steady, with New Zealands on offer Id lower. Dominion Breweries' lights were transferred at 6/, with more in request, and sellers asking 6/6. For New Zealand Breweries buyers quoted 3d higher, and holders came in at £2 12/9. Inquiries for Staples' were raised to £1 15/. Broken Hills had an unsatisfied demand at £3 14/6, and sellers closcd 2d above. Dunlops recorded an advance of sd. after which limits were 18/6 and 18/9. For G. J. Coles the quotes were £3 19/9 and £4 0/3. Farmers' Fertiliser improved 7d and appeared firm. There was a buyer for Wilsons Cement at £1 15/9, and sellers came in at £1 17/. SALES COMPLETED.
