BY-LAW ADOPTED.
PARKING IN THE CITY. A comprehensive by-law, embracing parking in the city streets, was adopted by the Auckland City Council last night and will be before the council for confirmation on September 28. In the meantime the greatest publicity will be given to th" new laws and objections and suggested amendments, if any, will be considered.
Mr. J. S. Brigham, the town clerk, explained that the new by-law had been drafted so as to bring within its compass all the by-laws of the council affecting parking. All the streets affected had been brought together in an alphabetically arranged schedule at the end of the by-law, and this should facilitate ready reference. An alteration had been made in the wording by the substitution of the . word "stationary" for "unattended." Hitherto the council's by-laws had- prohibited the leaving of vehicles "unattended" for more than the specified times, but a vehicle with its drive* in it could remain stationary anywhere for an unlimited period.
After an objection by Mr. J. L. Coakley, it was explained that there was provision for persons to leave vehicles stationary while delivering or receiving goods or picking up or setting c'vvn passengers, and for any period not exceeding five minutes while the driver or person in charge was actually engaged on lawful business in the vicinity. :
The by-law was adopted.
