ELLERSLIE TRACK.
A QUIET MORNING. HARLECH DISPLAYS SPEED. No. 3 grass track, on which the poles were 10ft out, was available for fast work at Ellerslie this morning. The going was very heavy and in consequence most of the horses worked on the sand track. Mazir and Master Brierly ran six furlongs in 1.23, the first three being covered in 41s. There was little between them at the finish and both worked well. Tybalt and Royal Appellant were allotted a similar task, which they completed in 1.30. They could have improved a good deal on this time. Te Hai and United traversed a round in 1.50, the last six furlongs being traversed in 1.24. Te Hai was going the easier at the finsh. Lady Diana was timed to run the last three furlongs of her work in 40 3-ss, hitting out with plenty of dash. On the two-year-old track Harlech was sprinted over a furlong twice, recording 13 2-5s and 12 3-os respectively. Considering the state of the going the last effort was an attractive , one and there is no doubt about his speed! •; '"' V ■" \' ; * Ruling King (D. Craddock) gave a good display over four hurdles in the centre. This horse is looking better than he' has done for some time. DOING GOOD PREPARATION. Valmint is getting through a good preparation at Ellerslie, and "Bill" Fergus, who has been in charge, owing to the illness of J. E. Thorpe, has the chestnut gelding in first-class fettle. This four-year-old is not engaged at the Avondale meeting, but will compete in hack events at the Auckland spring meeting, to be held next month. He has previously won at Ellerslie,- and although he may need a race before he is at his best, a good future should be in store for the son of Vaals and Lomint.
