PARK IN RANGES.

CORONATION GESTURE,

CITY'S AID WANTED,

Support from the Auckland Citv Council in its effort to securc a large area in the Waitakere ranges as a park to commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty King Edward VIII. was sought night by a representative deputaticfi from the Waitakere Coronation Park Committee. The deputation was sponsored by the Institute of Horticulture.

Mr. ,T. 13. Paterson was spokesman. He said the committee wanted the backing of the council and also to co-operate with the body. It also desired to preserve the land for posterity. He knew that it was proposed to build a road through tlie ranges, but what use was a road alone? Much damage was being done to the bush there. "We want to make that a Coronation gesture from Auckland," Mr. Paterson added.

In reply to a question, Mr. Paterson said that the area concerned amounted to over 00.000 acres.

Mr. Kenneth Mackenzie was the only other speaker. He endorsed what Mr. Paterson had said, adding that the committee now had a wonderful opportunity.

Speaking for himself, the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, said that to make a park in the ranges was the obvious thing to do. But the council had done a good deal for the city. It was up to the local bodies to do something.

The Hon. B. Martin suggested that the matter should go to the parks committee and to the finance committee.
