TIMBER EXPORTS.

PROHIBITION SOUGHT. DANGER OF DEPLETION? A. AND P. SOCIETY'S CONCERN. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. Recently the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Society sought the support of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce in its efforts to prohibit the export of timber, oi) the grounds that New Zealand timber would be cut out in a very few years, while the world supply was vanishing and the demand was increasing. The matter was referred by the chamber to the • Otago Timber Merchants' Association, which expressed the opinion that to prohibit export wpuld be a' fatal mistake, and that the arguments used by the Hawke's Bay Association were without foundation. In fact, at the present time, production exceeded demand, and many forests were yet untouched. Export to Australia was esseiuial as it employed a very large number of workers, and sales would bring money to the Dominion. The needs of the Dominion with regard to future supplies of timber were watched very closely by an efficient and active forestry 6taff. A member said that if the letter liad been referred to the Dunedin Builrleis Association they would have leceive information which would have opene their eyes. Some New Zealand timber was exported to Australia an so there cheaper than it could be purchased in New Zealand. . . It was decided to refer tne let tar to the Dunedin Bidders' Association and to write to the Hawkers Bay Association asking for amplification of xts statements.
