WEEK OPENS TAMELY.* G. J. COLES AN EXCEPTION. A fresli week opened very quietly 011, tlia Auckland Stock Exchange this morning. There were no sales in the room and only a small list from outside. Bidding generally was rather slow, brokers being satisfied for the most part to reinstate week-end quotations^ An exception was noted in G. J. Coles, which made a further advance, with a buyer at £4 4/6 and sellers 3d higher. In the banking section New Zealands were steady, with further business at £1 19/9, and a subsequent market between £1 19/3 and £2. South British Insurance nad business unchanged at £4 9/, after which more could have been placed at the same figure. There was a good demand for Breweries, with inquiries for limes, Dominion, New Zealand, Staples' and Tooth's. Consolidated Bricks were close to business between 9/9 and 9/11, while buyers of Union Oils dropped back 3d, to £1 10/9. Government stocks were again in steady demand, and a parcel of '46's was available at £104, and one of '49's at £106. Cautious Tone at Noon. There was still a cautious tone at noon, and the sales list reflected fairly steady values within limited scope. New Zealand Newspapers were most active at unchanged rates. G. J. Coles and Woolworths (N.Z.) both advanced, the former sharply, almost reaching their former peak. There were still buyers at the new figure, with no later sellers. The industrial section generally showed numerous blanks in buyers' qquotations, and margins were generally wide. In the banking buyers of v Commercials moved up Id. New Zealand Insurances were still asked for at the market rate. For Auckland Gas sellers reduced their limits Id, to £1 3/11. The mining- section was lifeless. SALES COMPLETED. AT THE 10 A.m.
