WOMEN'S HOCKEY.

I FIJIAN S BEATEN. t GOOD WIN FOR AUCKLAND. [ With a score of 8 goals to nil in their favour, Auckland outclassed the Fijian ; touring representatives at Eden Park on [ Saturday. The game was hot classy, and [ even on the part of the winners there j was nothing that momentarily approached • brilliance. Auckland won largely from the ' mistakes of the opposition, which was rather weak, and had full control of the game from the first bully-off. 'the winners, however, played a vigorous and determined game, full of hard hitting, long passing, 1 and fairly good control of the ball," and scored more or less as they wished. The teams were :— Fiji: L. Storck. M. Fenn, M.- Bentley, A. Eastgate, F. Wilson, O. Foreman, S. ; Molloy, M. Eastgate, E. Raffles, M. Errey, ' L. Sutherland. ' Auckland: M. Hutchins, L. Webb, V. Rollerson, .T. Alley, M. Elliott, D. ' Saul, P. Shirtcliffe, J. Lowe, L. Gawler, A. Bell, L. Askew. Auckland attacked from the bully-ojr, but •it was a good five minutes before the Fiji goalie, Misa Storck, w(is called upon, and she responded well. Auckland kept up the pace, and it was only the vigour of the defence, which intercepted cleverly, that kept them out. After ten minutes the Fijians made their first really convincing attack, Miss Sutherland, centre-forward, inspiring her side by dashing long shots and accurate passing. The attack was all in vain, however, for Auckland, led by Miss Askew, swept down on the Fijian goal, into which Miss Gawler sent a beautiful shot which completely baffled the goalie. The game had now been in progress for 15 minutes. In the next minute Auckland were within scoring range, but Miss Storck was again safe. The next movement, however, resulted In another brilliant solo effort by Miss Gawler, who sent in a snappy shot which the Fiji goalie had no possibility of stopping. A short-lived attack on the Auckland goal followed, but there was a sllckness and crispness in the Aucklanders' play, and a lack of cohesion among the Fijians, that resulted in a rather one-sided display. Even when Fiji were in the Auckland goal-mouth, Miss Hutcljins, Auckland's goalie, was hardly worried, the Fijians' mistakes being the Aucklanders' safeguard. Miss Cotter brilliantly initiated a solo movement, which went half-way down the lield, and ended in a scurry, from which Mies G. Bell scored- with a hot shot which the Fiji goalie could not even reach. Halftime score: Auckland 3 Fiji 0 Within five minutes of the resumption of play after half-time, Auckland scored again, Miss G. Bell finishing off a pretty organised movement from one goal to the other. Miss L. Sutherland and Miss Lee led the Fijians back, but the long hitting and accurate passing of tlie Aucklanders were too much for the visitors, and eventually resulted in a goal by Miss G. Lowe, making the score 5 to 0. At this stage Miss Foreman (Fiji) went off injured, and was not replaced. Auckland were now having quite decidedly the better of the game, and kept the Fijians almost ceaselessly on the defensive: The winners were within inches of. scoring when Miss G. Bell shot a little too hard, but the movement begun by her ended in an easy goal by Miss Lowe, Miss Gawler following a minute or two later with a snappy shot, which made the score 7 to 0. It was now easy work for Auckland, and Miss Cotter 'had no trouble in goaling from the bully-off. Fiji now attacked hotly, but their efforts, came to nothing, as did an immediatelyfollowing attack, at the end of which J. llarman just missed goaling. The game ended a moment later, with the score:— Auckland •. 8 Fiji ........ . 0 Miss A. Triname and Mrs. K. Hamlin acted as umpires.
