The third series of games in the ep€ci al ' senior competition which is being carried out during the absence of the representstibe team was played on Saturday m «. weather, when wins were recorded ht Training College, Uni%-ersity,-College Rifl» Otahuhu and Manukau. " ra > The first appearance of Caughey this season gave 'Varsity a stronger attarv against Grafton on No. 2 ground at Eden Park. 'Varsity won 19 —IT. Cauguey anil Coonev did much to win the game fn, their side. 'Varsity pressed at the start j of the first half—speedy backs and good backing up. Using a strong downflVu wind and setting their pack to work, Graf ton took the ascendency towards half-ti m t" but the blues were still able to hold lead of 11—6. The game was even after the spell sind at one stage it looked »» though Grafton might ring the changes but though the pack came to light and' Paton worked overtime. 'Varsity held the decisive few points' lead. The game ended 1!)—17. The scorers were:—'Varsity: Mnl vihill, Hayman, Caughey (2), Cooner Grafton : Ferguson. Arkle, Paton (f kick), Bunting, Tannahill. The referw was Mr. A. V. Styles. Plaving superior football at Sturges Park, Otahuhu completely outclassed Grammar in a game that had many bright ana snappy movements, and ran out victors to the tune of 3© points to 9. Tries were scored for Otahuhu by Pearson (3), Bonntree (2), Ballott, C. Williams, Cato ,and Skeen, two being converted by Jones and Pearson. Mackay and Kelly scored tries for Grammar. Though they assumed an B—3 lead at half-time over Training College North Shore failed to make the grade in the second spell, when the teachers, playing an inspired game, left the home team stanflinr still and ran the score to 19—8. Tries were won for the College by Grant (2), Hamilton, Fletcher and Scott, Thornton converting two. Kainey and A. Sainty crossed for : Shore, Jessup converting one try. Mr. E. J, Dudson was referee. Owing mainly to the bustling tactics ot tlie Rifles' forwards, and consistent straight running and hard tackling by Vear an'd McComisli, at five-eighths, Technical wore faced with a deficit of 14 points at halttime. The greens rallied in the second spell, but failed to catch up. From the kick-off Rifles attacked, and soon after the commencement, Hoddam, the ! big Rifles' winger, gathered in nicely after :a short etab kick by Vear, and went across in the corner. Duncan's kick failed I Technical retaliated, and the blues had to find relief in forcing. But McCormick was soon in the picture, gaining half the field i with a great run before passing to Stewart who crossed wide out. A great kick bv ! Duncan made the score : Rifles 8, Technical 0. Almost immediately McCormick showed lup again, and taking a pass from Vear • handed on in a handy position to Hoddam ; who added another try. Another score by I Barker crowned the blue forwards' efforts i The score at half-time was: College Rifles 114, Technical 0. In the second spell Rifles I kept up the attack for a short time, but I faded badly in the later stages. The'next score came when Murdock, dummying past ; three tacklers, touched down between the i posts. Lash's kick went over. Right on time Reid, the green half, went round the blind side from a mix-up in the corner making the final score: Rifles 14, Technical Manukau held a definite advantage over Marist throughout their game, and the final score was 10—6 in their favour. The sound combination and understanding between the backs and forwards played a large part in the home team's win, althou"h Marist were without the services of nine of their usual team, and consequently often let some great opportunities go beggin- , Tries were scored for Manukau by Alien! I Stone and Moir. Brimble converted one i try, and Wiklund kicked a penalty and I converted a try. Duncan and Fitzgibbon j scored for Marist. SECONDARY SCHOOLS' GAMES. The Auckland Grammar School 15, beat Mount Albert Grammar 0. showing promising form for the hard test next Saturday, when the school meets its traditional rivals. New Plymouth High School.
