INTER-ISLAND GAME.

NORTH TOO GOOD FOR SOUTH. DOUBLE-FIGURE VICTORY. FULL-BACK SCORES A TRY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. With marked superiority both forward and back, Xorth Island defeated South Island in their annual Rugby match by 17 points to 6 at Lancaster Park yesterday afternoon. For the first half of the game there was little play that held out hopes of a good All Black side, but alter the interval, with their forwards packing better, the Xorth Island rearguard saw plenty of the ball and brought off some movements that raised the crowd to its feet and shot wide holes in the Southerners' defence. The game was played under perfect conditions on a fast field and more than 15,000 people attended. The teams were: — North Island. Full-back—Pollock (Wellington). Three-quarters.—Dick (Auckland), Sullivan (Taranaki), Edwards (Wellington). Five-eighths.—Killeen (captain, Auckland), Griffiths (Wellington). Half-back.—Russell (Waikato). Forwards.—Palton (Hawke's Bay), Hadley (Auckland), Jackson (Hawke's Bay), Lockington (Auckland), Fraser-Smith (Wellington), Reid (Hawke's Bay), Wells (Wellington), McXeile (Taranaki). Reserves. —Backs: Sadler (Wellington), Le Quesne (Hawke's Bay). Forwards: O'Dowda (Taranaki)., Lambourn (Wellington). South Island. Full-back.—Gilbert (West Coast). Three-quarters. — Hart (Canterbury), Mann (West Coast), Black (Otago). Five-eighths.—-Gillies (Otago), Gaffney (South Canterbury). Half-back. —Simon (Otago). '■ Forwards. — Hattersley (Canterbury), Orman (Biiller), Quaid (Otago), Ward (Southland). King (captain, West Coast), Milliken (Canterbury), Green (Otago), Rankin (Canterbury). Reserves. — Backs: Mcßhail (Canter- • bury). Forwards: Parkhill (Otago)., Strang (South Canterbury). Killeen to the Fore. Xorth had to force after ten minutes' play and then a sharp run by Dick (Auckland) carried play past half-way. Killeen darted through a small gap at top speed and made a fine opening by switching the ball inside to his forwards. Jackson took i the pass and completed a thrilling move- - ment, Pollock converting from fairly wide ■ out. From 30 yards out Gilbert kicked - a splendid penalty goal. South was ' penalised in front of its own posts from ' a scrum infringement and Pollock goaled : easily, making the half-time ecore: Xorth 8 South 3 After lively exchanges on resumption, : Hart made a brilliant run down the ; embankment side before centring. Gaffney - picked up the ball going at top and was i almost clean away when Griffiths took I him low. "Then came a sensational counter- ■ move in which nearly all the Xorth team • joined. Edwards came up fast on the wing and threw the ball in as Hart went low. Killeen took it and linked up with , his forwards. Jackson, Fraser-Smith and ! Reid handled and Reid scored 15 yards | from the posts. Pollock took the kick, j but the ball struck a post. Pollock's Classic Effort.

1 Pollock flashed into action with a • spectacular solo run on his own a yai-d from the touchline. He took Hart by surprise and left Gilbert standing to score ! a magnificent try near the corner flag. He took the kick at goal and just missed. ' The South forwards were striving ■ desperately and they burst through in a 1 I great dribbling rush which took the ball to half-way and, amid excitement, attack after attack was launched. Gaffney went through and passed in to three forwards, Green, Ward and King. It looked an almost certain try, but Griffiths came back at great speed to tackle Ward just short of the line. South kept it up, but did not have the thrust and speed of the Northern men, and a fierce offensive' was in vain. Gilbert marked in front of his own .posts, but North came hard again. Sullivan took a low pass cleanly just outside the twentyfive, side-stepped McPhail, and went over to score just as Gilbert dived for his heels. Pollock's kick was too low. The South forwards took play to the other end and Simon opened out shrewdly on the blind side for Black to dive over between two opponents. Gilbert's kick failed, and the final score was: North Island 17 South Island 6 The action of the N.Z.R.F.U. in arranging the Nortli-Soutli fixture on the same day as the Auckland-Wellington match, and the finale of the Grand National races, had unpleasant consequences of an indirect nature; but which nevertheless spoilt the game as a contest. While the Northern team remained the same from the date of its announcement a fortnightago, the Southern three-quarter line on Saturday in the second spell bore no relation to the names originally published last Tuesday. These were: Mann (West Coast), Mitchell (captain, Southland), and Morrison (South Canterbury). It was stated that Canterbury's stalwarts, Hart and Manchester, were not considered because they were nbt available to play against Australia in the Tests, and apparently Watt, the Otago and New Zealand 'Varsities' great winger, was not available. So with the selected reserves 22 names altogether were exhausted, yet still one more player was mobilised when McPhail (Canterbury three-quarter) replaced the injured Mann in the second spell, and Hart had eventually to be pressed into service. We know that Mitchell did not play because of an injury against Auckland, but no word has been received of what happened to Morrison, who was in the South Island trials last winter, or of Mortlock, first reserve back, and another who appeared in 1934 and 1935 New Zealand trials.
