CHRISTCHUROH, Friday.

The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club brought a successful meeting to a close to-day in fine weather, and with a large attendance. The track was in great order, and racing , was good all "day. There was an unfortunate accident near the finish of the Islington Handicap, when Rongomai fell, Isobcl Derby and Plain Pearl toppling overlier J. J. Kennerley, driver of Isobel Patch, was taken to hospital, and it was reported later that*he was surtering from concussion. The totalisator investments amounted fn £37,224 10/, compared with £20,061 last year. The total for the meeting was £102,435 10/, against £72,552 last* year an increase of £29,853. ' A Great Finish. Worthy Star Isobel Patch and Real Bell broke at the start of the Midwinter Handicap. Helen's Bay following suit leaving the straight, while Gala Dav tangled after two furlongs. Resound was'the early leader, and along the back she had Little Keta and Alataunga in close attendance Rustle then moved up, taking charge at the end of half a mile, with Little Reta and Resound next. Isobel Patch and Mataunga followed these three starting* the last round. Then Gala Dav broke again Rustle led into the straight, but tired in the last bit. -Illere was a great finish Mataunga getting a late opening to snatch a neck win on the post from Rustle, with Little Reta a head away. Isobel Patch was a neck further back, beating Norman Fox by a head. Confidently Driven. Racketeer and Kibo broke at the start of the Lightning Handicap. Broughshane led out from Greeiimantle. with Gallant Knight, Full Hand, Blair Athol and Stirling Lady soon handy. With half the journey gone Gallant Knight took second place. Blair Athol broke at the home turn, Stirling Lady suffering interference Broughshane led Gallant Knight and Stirling Lady into the straight, where Greeiimantle dashed up, winning by half 'a length, while Happy Knight finished fast to beat Stirling Lady by a -neck for second. Broughshane was two lengths away, just in front of Gallant Knight The. winner, who had not raced previously at the meeting, was driven a confident race by his owner, D. C. Watts. A Brilliant Performance.

The National Handicap saw De Soto put up a brilliant performance, while there was a wonderful finish for third place. Vesuvius led out from Llewellyn's IYide. After a furlong Sure was second, but she broke, interfering with De Soto, who dropped back to ,third to last. With half a mile gone Vesuvius and Llewellyn's Pride had Rey Spec, Tempest and Sunny Morn as their nearest attendants. Koll'o • and - Willow Wave heading' the others. There was not much change half a mile from home. De Soto then ■ made a fast run, taking the lead a furlong further on. He was three lengths clear of Llewellyn's Pride "turning' for 'home;. 'Vesuvius having dropped out, and the margin remained ,y; - unchanged. Harold Logan joined the next bunch for the brush home, four horses . going past almost in line. Tempest gained third place by a head from Rey Spec, with Harold Logan arid Sunny Morn heads v. away. The performance of .De Soto was • that <jf a high-class horse. j ' A Disappointing Field.Three scratchings left a disappointing field of five for the Federal Handicap. Reporter soon joined Bonny Azure in the lead, with Grand Mogul in third place. Gamble was at the tail "of the field when he made a bad break at the end of two furlongs. Reporter had a slight advantage after half a mile, and turned for home with a lead of two lengths from Bonny Azure. Then Grand Mogul made an effort, but Reporter beat him easily by a length. Bonny Azure was five lengths away, with Francis Lincoln and Gamble several lengths further back. It looked as if Grand Mogul lost his chance when he delayed his challenge till the final furlong. ; '

All the Way. Hocks Ahead was in front all the way in the Heathcote Handicap. Aristotle, Young Frank and Bingen Palm followed him early, but Craganour joined in six furlongs from home, losing his place again a little further on. Along the back Rocks Ahead was followed by Bingen Palm, Grace McElwyn and Young Frank, with" Raydus moving up. Rocks Ahead hung on to win comfortably by a. length. Grace McEhvyn took second nlace at the entrance to the straight, but Raydus beat him home by half a length. Young Frank and Bingen Palm were two lengths further back. A Great Race, The Aldington Handicap was a great" race, with an exciting finish. Flotsam, Discord and New Metford broke early, Garner taking charge after two while a furlong further on Norma Bingen was next. "With half the journey gone Airflow and Wrackler were the nearest attendants on the leading pair. Racing round the home turn Norma Bingen and Garner were three lengths in front of Wrackler, with Airflow next, while Sea Gift and Discord were making a great run. Norma Bingen was in front halfway down the straight, but Wrackler headed her near the post, having to be driven out to stall off Sea Gift, who was only half a length away, a similar distance in front of Norma Bingen. Then came Discord and Garner, close up. Three Horses Fall. Big Author <md Pot Luck broke at the start of the Islington Handicap. Golden Cross led for a furlong, when Plain Pearl headed him, while after half a mile Subsidy, Arachne, Marie Celeste and Isobel Derby were handy, with Pot Luck tailing the field, except for Big Author a, long way in the rear. Half a mile from home Rongomai moved up, followed by Pot Luck, who joined Subsidy in the lead, just in front of Rongomai, with a bunch in hot pursuit. Then Pot Luck took charge. Less than a furlong from the post there was an accident, Rongomai stumbled and fell, Isobel Derby and Plain Pearl falling over her. Marie Celeste finished best, beating Golden Cross by a length. Pot Luck was two lengths a'way, half a length in front of Subsidy. The Concluding Event. Cloudy Range soon took charge in the Farewell Handicap from Supertax and Vesuvius, while at the stand Rey Spec and Raydus, were handy. Along the back Polio and Tempest made a forward move. Cloudy Range was followed round the home turn by Supertax. Raydus and Rey Spec. Once in the straight Cloudy Range went on to win easily by a length and a half- from Rey Spec, while half a length away Gold Tinge, with a late dash, beat Raydus on the post for third. Blue Mountain, Sunny Morn and Supertax headed the others. Oloudy Range was never troubled after he took the lead at the end of a furlong.
