TRANSPORT PROBLEMS
QUESTION OF OVERLAPPING,
TOUR BY MR. PHELAN,
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
TE AWAMUTU, Friday.
After visiting the southern part of his district and conferring with the No. 2 Transport Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, licensing authority for the No. 1 Transport District, visited Tp. Awamutu last evening. He conferred with road transport interests on various problems and made special reference to the bobby calf trade and its effect on roads.
Messrs. A. Rowan (president), R. G. Andrew and G. 0. Jourdain re-, presented the Waipa Master Carriers' Association, and explained some of the local difficulties. Mr. Phelan assured the carriers that everything would be done to straighten out the troubles. He hoped that transport operators would find little or nothing to cause them great concern in the future.
When the discussion turned to general overlapping, Mr. Phelan admitted that complex problems were awaiting solution. "We shall at least try to improve matters," he said, "and somebody may bo hurt in the process."
Mr. Rowan: Try as you may, do what you will, you cannot make things very much worse for the carrier!
An indication of the effect ol the altered working week was given by Mr. Phelan, when mentioning the economic aspects of the carrying business. He showed that the ruling wage rate, when divided into 48 working hours, would equal 1/11 per hour. Under the fortyhour week it would be 2/3 to 2/4 per hour. This, he said, was a factor .which could not be ignored in assessing costs of service.
