ENGLISHMEN AT WHANGAREI.

NORTHLAND OUTCLASSED. FULL-BACK SCORES FINE TRY. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. Playing brilliant football the Englishmen greatly pleased the crowd, estimated at 4000, at Jubilee Park yesterday afternoon. Their 34 to 0 victory was the result of superior team work, speed and weight, coupled with individual brilliancy, general unorthodoxy and enterprise. The Northland team, although outclassed, sacrificed at least six points by faulty goal-kicking. The outstanding player on the New Zealand side was undoubtedly Kerr, whose brilliant tackling often atoned for faults closer in. His line-kicking was of splendid direction and length, enabling his side to retrieve much ground. Haslam, at centre, covered an immense amount of ground. His task was made more difficult by the ability of Watkins and Jenkins to leave the local inside men "in the air." The unorthodoxy of the English scrum halves upset F. Hollows and" Verrall, the firstnamed being slow to get his man, while Verrall played so close as to encourage devastating changes, particularly ' by Jenkins. The local forwards, although conceding a couple of stone all round, lent their rearguard splendid support. Whenever the ball went loose they wore on it, but time after time wasted much effort, as Brough would gallop in one direction with the Northland rovers in pursuit, and then quickly vear 011 the opposite angle to leave them standing. The outstanding Northland forward was R. Hollows. Many of the Englishmen showed signs of being jaded towards the finish. Brough easily impressed the Northlanders as a full-back of distinction. Of the threequarters Hudson had most opportunities and made the best of them. Tries were gained by: Hudson (2), Davies, Brough. Troup, Atkinson, Jenkins, Arkwright. Five goals were kicked by Hodgson. The full-back's try was the result of his fooling the opposition with a clever change of pace, a couple of dummies, and a burst up the line.
