LABOUR'S BUDGET.
MR. COATES CRITICAL
PRIME MINISTER REPLIES.
" PLEDGES HAVE BEEN KEPT."

The debate on the first Budget of the Labour Government was opened in the House of Representatives to-night. There were only two speakers—Mr. Coatos, former Minister of Finance, who launched' an attack on behalf of the Opposition, and the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage' who replied to the points raised by Mr. Coates.
Mr. Coates was strongly critical of the financial proposals of the Government and in the course of over an hour's speech he dealt trenchantly with various aspects of the Budget proposals.
11l liis reference to guaranteed prices he alleged that the Government had taken twopence a pound out of the pockets of the dairy farmers.
Mr. Savage vigorously defended the Budget proposals and maintained that the Government had honoured the pledge it had made to the people during the election campaign.
