WHEAT IMPORTS.
DOMINION'S NEEDS.
DECREASED PRODUCTION.
FUTURE SUPPLY QUESTION,
(By Telegfcaph.—'Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The wheat regulations, tinder the Board of Trade Act, were discussed in the House of Representatives this morning, Mr. T. H. MeCombs (Government, Lyttelton) referring to the importation of Canadian wheat. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson (Independent, Egmont) asked if the wheat industry was standing up to its obligations regarding the area sown. He understood that sufficient wheat could be grown tci supply all New Zealand's requirements and more. The Minister of Industries and Commerce; Mr. Sullivan, said there were special circumstances accounting for the lower supply of New Zealand wheat in the present year. He thought the time would soon arrive when New Zealand would be able to supply wheat suitable for millers' requirements without importing. Despite what had been done in recent years there was still not enough encouragement given to farmers to grow more wheat, and he thought an increase in the price was justified.
Mr. H. G. Dickie (National, Patea): Why not import wheat? The Minister said that was what lie had in mind, but before, acting he had to be sure first that New Zealand could grist Canadian wheat.
