CYCLING.

WITH THE AMATEURS.

PAPATOETOE CLUB,

Further testimony to the strength of the Papatoetoe Amateur Cycle Club was given last Saturday, on the occasion of the August Centre races, when members of the junior section of this club again captured all the main honours in their 13%-mile race, with first, second and fourth place, and fastest, second fastest und fourth fastest times. Kea Picknell learned a lesson from Colin Carter's runaway win in the July Centre race, and used his head and a quick jump to advantage on the last hill. He had ridden a great race, and fully deserved this win. Now the three Picknell brothers, wearing the Papatoetoe mauve and gold, have each won a junior centre race ( over the last three years—Jim in 1934, i Charlie in 1935, and now Ken. Noel Noonan, second, rode his best race. He was only 52s slower than fastest. Owen Webb (0.0), fourth, seemed certain of third place, but eased off just short of the line. Fastest time was made by Jim Middleton, gaining his second fastest _ time for the season. With co-markers Cliff Morris and Colin Carter he set and maintained a great pace, and must have maintained practically the same lead from the scratch men throughout, for he was one second faster than Les Whyle (Lynndale). These two dead-heated for fourth place in the provincial championships. Des Knight (scr) was two seconds slower than Middleton. Knight has a unique record. The first time he ever made fastest time was in a centre race, and the only two times he has gained the great honour he has broken the former records. Colin Carter (30s) was another second out. His is riding exceptionally strongly now. Others who were well up were:—Peter Knight (7.0), seventh; Laurie Knott (4.0), eleventh; Don Arvidson (3.0)," twelfth; and Jackie Auckram (7.0), fourteenth. ' Charlie Cochrane, senior scratch man, was always well to the fore, and only waß beaten for fastest time in the sprint. Next month, when the unpaced harbour cliamEionship is held, he should: be seen at his est. He is a strong peclaller and definitely not a sprinter. It is hoped he will be quite recovered from his injuries. Ray Beehre also rode very well, and was the first of his bunch of back-markers to finish. • ¥he Tradesmen's Cup, for members of the Papatoetoe Club,_ is to be again raced for this month. This is for seniors and juniors, and is held over the Howick course. Next week's races are over the Wyllie Road circuit.
