FORGED WORKS OF ART
The Vienna police have arrested a number of persons suspected of building up a trade in forged pictures, says the Vienna correspondent of the London "Observer." The police found that these dealers were using one of two methods. They either bought up paintings by good artists at low prices and then placed the signatures of well-known painters 011 them. Or they took an inferior picture, made it look old, and finally added the signature of a famous Austrian painter. Valueless pictures were sold as the paintings of Egger-Lienz, Tina Blau, Gauerniann, Pettenkoffer, etc., names which in Australia would correspond to Millais and Rossetti. Only very few of these pictures were sold in Austria, the bulk of them being traded in the Succession States, while some went to the United States.
