GOLF EXHIBITION.

GAME AT MAUNGAKIEKIE.

THREE RENOWNED PLAYERS,

JIM FERRIER TO PLAY

A unique golf treat is promised Aucklanders to-morrow afternoon at One Tree Hill, for it has been arranged that James Ferrier, the Australian amateur, will take part in the exhibition match which had already been arranged for the American professionals, Gene Sarazen and Miss Helen Hicks. The fourth player will be T. Galloway, the Maungakiekie professional, who will be partnered by Ferrier.

The Americans will arrive by the Mariposa to-morrow morning to commence a New Zealand tour before proceeding to Australia. Ferrier, the most brilliant vouthful golfer that Australia has produced, is also on the liner returning from his trip to Great Britain. The.high hopes which were held of his capabilities before he left on his visit abroad were fully justified by his play in England. At all the tourneys at which he competed he displayed outstanding brilliance. His opening performance was to finish in fourth place in the northern open; he was then rather unexpectedly beaten at the twentyfirst hole in the first round of the Scottish amateur championship. He then won the Gleneagles Silver Tassie. with rounds ot 08 and 72. liis total of 140 being a record for the course. This directed further attention to his prospects in the_ British amateur championship, and Ferrier was beaten only in the filial by Hector lhomsoii, and tiien on the last green. Victory and a new record of 68' followed in the Golf illustrated Gold Vase. Ferrier s final appearance was in the open championship, in which he again displayed brilliance, but marred his medal play with some costly errors. The open was his last appearance in England. Sarazen, too, left Kngland for ew Zealand immediately after the British open, after ticing for fifth place. He has been a consistent visitor to England and won the open in 1932 with the record score of 283, which has been equalled twice since but not beaten. In 1931 he was second in the open and he tied for third in 1933. In America he has for several years been one of the best players in a galaxy of stars. At the age of 18, 16 years ago. he qualified third in that event and finished thirteenth. He won the event in 1922 and again in 1932. Besides being tile professional champion of u.o.A. in 1922. 1923 and 1933. he has consistently taken his share of the prize money in the big American .competitions. Sarazen is no stranger to New Zealand, for lie played here on his way to and on his return from the Melbourne Centenary tournament. ... TT , ~ Miss Helen Hicks, "hard-hitting Helen, as she is known, was one of the best of the American lady golfers, and turned her talents to commercial advantage in 1934. The exhibition at One Tree Hill tomorrow will commence at 1.45, and afterwards Sarazen and Miss Hicks will give a lecture and demonstration of shots.
