TEACHERS' INCREASED PAY.

Teachers under the Auckland Education Board will not get the "back pay accruing from the Government's restoiation of the 1931 standard of wages as from July 1 until they return to work on September 7 after ,the next, holidays. At yesterday's meeting of the board, the secretary, Mr. W. D. Dunlop, reported that the -Education Department had asked the board to supply,'by August 10, figures for the extra amount that woulff be required to meet , this month's salaries, plus the back pay due to employees, as from July 1* dunlop stated that it was impossible to work out the figures in the time allowed. The board, he said,-'-usually paid salaries at the end of the month, but as there was a fortnight's school holiday from August 21 to September 7, the board would pay the August wages on the 21st of this month. The board's clerical staff coulcl not possibly work, out the. amount of back pay due to each employee m the time available. The board paid, lie pointed out, over 2000 salaries, and there were such complicating factors as house allowances to be taken into consideiation. On the' motion of the chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, the board decided to make payments on the old scale on August 21, when the schools. - closed_ for the holidays, and to make a spccial payment of back pay on September 7, when the schools reopened.
