INCREASED GRANT.
NEEDS OF EDUCATION.
MANY CLAIMS RECOGNISED.
A total of £3,449,089 is allowed in the Education Department estimates, representing an increase of over £650,000. Primary education is expected to cost about £300,000 more, secondary education about £100.000 more, the training of teachers about £100.000 more, and new buildincs about £75.000 more. The principal items of educational expenditure, compared with the amounts actually spent last year, are:—

The estimates for maintenance and renewal of school buildings and improvements to grounds, with the amount spent last year in parentheses, include the following:—Public schools and training colleges, £147.000 (£66,091); secondary schools. £19,500 (£1554); technical ,schools, £9500 (£2624); native schools, £7000 (£5498).
For school committees, incidental expenses are shown at £156,000, against an expenditure last year of £103,647. Concessions are made to secondary school pupik. To provide books in necessitous cases a grant of £1000 is reinstated, while it is proposed to pay a' boarding allowance and to convey pupils by road as ;n the ca-se of primary school pupils. A sum of £14.600 is allowed for board and £14.300 for road transport. Total expenditure on postprimary education is estimated at £695,377, against an expenditure of £589,483 last year. Salaries show an increase, due to restoration of cuts and the readmission of five-year-olds. £1.693,100 being allowed primary schools as compared with £1,518,918 last year. The cost of allowances to training college students is increased from £35,000 odd last vear to £110,500, due to an increase in the number students and to the reopening of the Southern colleges.
