PONSONBY'S NARROW WIN.

The ronsonby-Marist match was one of lost opportunities, both sides throwing coition chances away, especially the greens. The ground had not altogether recovered from the wet weather, which, added to the fact that tliroe games had already been pliivcd upon it before this game started, made it verv heavy. This made the match light, and did not allow the Ponsonby backs to team into action. The first half went to ronsonb.v, with Ilnlloran shining, getting the ball away quick and snappy, but Stockley was the weak link. The score was in Ponsonbj 8 favour at the change-over by G—o, lilaekman and Jack Stockley being the scorers. The first live minutes of the next half was very bright, both sides getting the referee's decision, with Anderson for Marists in addition raising the flags tor u "onl Later Aro scored, and an easy goal was missed. Then a certain try was lost by Anderson, who was pushed over the (lead-ball line. The game finished 9 — in i'onsonby's favour. For the winners Halloran and Jones shared the honours for outstanding play while Morgan and Carter were always in the thick of it. Glover was sound at full-back for the greens, with Bakalich 1111(1 Aro doing snappy work among the bucks. The six men in front played a i hard, solid game, and it would be hard to | individualise anyone. ; NEWTON DOWN TO RICHMOND, j The disparity in the scores notwithstanding, the Richmond-Newton match, won by the former 22—6, provided real Rug~y League on tlie heavy going of No. 2 area, which was in good condition considering the amount of rain recently. The Hovers, playing with steady cohesion, used their weight fore and aft to every advantage, and once the backs struck tlieir gait in the second half there was not much question as to the result, after Richmond were leading S—!l at the interval. Two players were outstanding, Miiicham, at centre three-quarter, and Hroiulliend in the second row of tlie scrum.
