RESTORED "CUTS."
AWARD RATES ONLY. STATEMENT BY MR. NASH. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Some uncertainty seems to have arisen regarding the payment of the 1931 rates in respect of persons who were receiving more than the award rate then. In an interview to-day the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, made it clear that there was nothing in the Finance Act to compel an employer to pay more than the award rate.
"All we are doing," lie stated, "is restoring the 1931 rate where there is an award. If an employer paid over the award rate, he shall still have to pay the award rate now, but it was not compulsory in 1931—and it is not now—to pay over the award rate."
