RAILWAYS AND TOURISTS.
Having read in a recent issue that tho Tourist Department was making arrangements for a tour of the North by motor car for overseas visitors. I wonder what the Minister of Railways will say about the matter. I feel sure that the late Government paid dearly for the seven and a half millions that was spent by this Department for a return of three and a half millions in the short time of live years. How long would the big firms in Auckland last under the same management? Surely it is time the Railways Department took over the management of the Tourist Department to protect its own interest and also the poor taxpayer. It seems fairly apparent that the present Government is drifting into the same groove as its predecessors. The shelving policy of allowing the cr itrol of the different Departments to pass int< the hands of Departmental officers is fatal, as Mr. Forbes, Mr. Coates. Mr. Hamilton and other members of the • Cabinet now know, and if tlie present Government allows the same conditions to obtain as the previous Government there will certainly be a change next election. SOUND JUDGMENT.
