Among the peasants of the Kossovo district in Southern Serbia brides have become so costly that a serious reduction in -marriages is threatened. Local custom decrees that the suitor, to win the hand of a maiden, must pay her father a lump sum. While the young folk protest against the high price— perhaps £23 —which the depression has i endered prohibitive, parents are reluc-. taut to lower it.
