IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE!
Not long ago William Wyler, famous director and ex-husband' of the lovely Margaret Sullavan, was charged with exceeding the speed limit along the broad Californian highways in his new car. The sentence was a fine of £10 and two days' imprisonment. Wyler paid his fine and appealed to the judge to postpone the prison term until after he had finished work on "These Three." The judge smiled benevolently and gave him a month's grace.
Hia„ parole expired, Wyler presented himself at the gaol, but in spite of his protestation of guilt, was refused admission. The warden had no official record of his conviction, so Wyler left his card and went home. Presently the telephone bell rang. Everything had been straightened out, and would Mr. Wyler please return at his earliest convenience.
Wyler magnanimously overlooked their previous display of inhospitality and took his punishmeut like a film director. He spent the two days preparing the script of his new pieture "Dodswortli." This took his mind off the riots, gaolbreaks, stool-pigeons, and brutality which, as every good cinemagoer knows, are part of the daily routine in all the best American prisons.
