MORE REVENUE FROM CUSTOMS.

Customs receipts 33 per cent higher and building permits more than doubled; these are the features of Auckland statistics for July published to-day. The comparison is with July of last year. There has been a progressive improvement since the beginning of the year, which reflects the buoyant condition of industry and trade. In Customs the Auckland collections for seven months have been greater by £320,630, petrol and tyre duties have increased by £■ 127,91*0, sales taxation has yielded £-84,536 more, and the excise oil beer is up by £15,092. This is a gain in the aggregate, for seven months, of £548,168. In Wellington the improvement is £556,000. Thus for the two main cities the flow of revenue into the Treasury is over £1,004,000 above the level of the January-July period of 1935. At some of the other ports the increase, although not so marked, is substantial. This has an important bearing on the Budget. If the present rate of improvement's maintained the addition to national revenue for the whole Dominion in the current financial year, from these sources alone, is likely to reach, and possibly exceed, £2,500,000.
