William Blakey, Sergcant-at-Mace, sailed for the United States to atten 1 the 150 th anniversary celebration of Berwick, Pennsylvania. He was aecompanicd by Mayor Philip Spowart and Sheriff Joseph Fleming, who carried an illuminated greeting from this city to its Pennsylvania namesake, founded by Evan Owens, a Berwick-on-Tweed man. City mace-hearer for 25 years, Blakey wore "a smart buff uniform cut in evening dress style, the tails bearing silver buttons on which was inscribed the city s crest —a bear under a tree. His halberd, or wand of office, is dated IG3B, but the office itself dates from 1542.
