WELL-BALANCED SIDE.

MATCH WITH ENGLISHMEN*. j I A well-balanced side has been chosen.by llif> sole selector, Mr. 11. Avery, to meet the English team in the opening same of I heir tour next Saturday at Carlaw Park. There will he no replacements, and for that reason 13 players only have neen chosen. The final selection is as follows: — Full-hack: C. Dempsey (Newton). • Three-quarters: L. Brown (City). W. Tittleton (Richmond); R. Bright (Newton). Five-eighths: W. Stockley (Ponsonby), A. Kay (I'onsonby). Half-back: K. Powell (Richmond). Forwards: A. Gault (Manukau). .T. Satherley (Richmond), -T. Breed (Marist), S. Watene (Manukau), F. I'iekrang (Manukau). 11. Tetley (Richmond). The team is required to assemble for training at 5 p.m. to-morrow for coaching by A. E. Cooke, the former All Black and New Zealand Itushy League representative. and the captain will be chosen on Wednesday evening. The thirteen should do credit to Auckland. as each man has speed and football brains. The only fault, perhaps, is that the team could do with a trifle more weight forward in view of the solid sextet which the visitors will pack, but the scrummagcrs have sorted themselves out, and every man is deserving o? his place. Gault has been playing splendid football, as also have Satherley and Pickrang. Breed has been the outstanding forward on the ground in several club matches lately, and played a rattling (rood game in the trial on Saturday week. lie could not have been left out. Watene is another who has played himself into the side, and lie has both the weight and football brains required to lend cohesion to the side. Tetley, while on the light side, could not be omitted, and lie should provide a splendid link between backs and forwards. The backs give promise of turning on bright and entertaining football, while being capable of coping with the fastmoving Englishmen on the defensive. Dempse.v was the logical choice for fullback after his superb exhibition in the North v. South game. The three-quarters are a trio of tried and tested men, who are capable of keeping the opposition busy, providing they receive a share of the ball. The Ponsonby pair, W. Stockley and Kay, should prove a good connecting link in the five-eighths line, while Powell is the right man in the right place behind the pack, lie has only to have the ball heeled to him to give his supports all the opportunities they require. If there is a surprise in the hacks, it is the omission of Haslam, the Marist back, whose all-round play of late has brought him into prominence. GRADE GAMES. SENIOR RESERVE. City 24. heat Manukau 7.
