ORGAN MUSIC.
"William Bowyang," in liis statement that ponular tunes rather than classical at organ recitals would draw the crowd scores a bullseye. At one of the Sydney Town Hall recitals a while ago the audience sat through a Sunday afternoon programme of classical stuff in a kind of coma of bored indifference. Then the organist played "Lily of Laguna" as I've never heard it played before or since, the chorus coming from a kind of far-off whisper to finish in a tremendous crescendo of music. The effect on the audience was electrical, and the applause deafening, with a prolonged demand for an encore. I suppose it shows a plebeian nature, but personally I'd sooner hear the exhilarating strains from a London barrel organ than much of the so-called hisrhbrow musical fodder. J. BEXFIELD.
