WINTER BOWLS.

CHALLENGE TROPHIES HELD. COUNCIL MEETS THIS WEEK. SOLDIERS ON THE GREEN. (By TRUNDLER.) A rising north-easter and threats of rain did not offer a bright prospect for 'bowls on Saturday, but the rain held off until the conclusion of the largest gathering of all, the returned soldiers' tournament at Onehunga, although there were a few light showers to interrupt play in the northern parts of the city. Next Saturday Balmoral will commence another two-Saturday rink tournament, for which there is already nearly a full entry. The first father and son pairs tournament was advanced another stage, the young champion of champions of the Auckland Centre defeating the Cooke combination. Observers have remarked that the former did not have to do it all himself, as his father played exceptionally well both days. Xext Saturday the Thomsons will meet the Darbys, pere et tils, and there again the son is usually regarded as the king pin, although the father has profited by the long experience gained since lie helped to found the Ellerslie Club 26 years ago. The council of the New Zealand Bowling Association will meet in Wellington on Wednesday morning to deal with an exceptionally long order paper, comprising matters of major importance to the game. The two Auckland representatives of the North Island, Mr., A. /]£. Whit'ten, president of the centre, and Mr. F. A. Hosking. past president, will leave by the afternoon express to-morrow, well primed with the opinions of the centre which nominated them on most of the subjects to be discussed. Nearly an hour was given to this last Thursday, at the annual meeting of the centre, but it was clearly understood that the meeting could not give them any instructions, as they are not the delegates of the Auckland Centre, having been elected by the votes I of the eleven centres in the North Island. Fortunately most of the evidence goes to show that council matters are not handled in a parochial spirit, for even if the younger members fail to appreciate the position the "elder statesmen" seem to realise that whatever is best for the whole Dominion must also be best for their own district. The Challenge Matches. None of the inter-club challenge trophies changed hands on Saturday. The Edwin Stars produced most unusual scoring, although the c-ard shows very little difference at the end: G. Cricliton. E. B. Wright, F. Livingstone, E. Xeale (Onehunga, holders) 27, v. J. Speir, J. Winks, A. C. Bush, W. Franks (Balmoral, challengers) 16. The visitors easily held their own at first, and reached 8 to 6 by the eighth head, but they lost the next nine heads, the steady play of the holders being assisted by most of the luck that was following rulis and trails. The losers declare that the Onehunga skip played a very line aggressive game, adopting his usual policy of "getting into it" wlien- ! ever the head was against him. The next challengers are G. McMillan (Rcmuera), J. Gray (Devonport), H. Whittle (Grey Lynn) and C. M. Gulpin (Rawhiti). The Denison I'ins also gave a runaway win for the holders, although there again the element of luck had a good deal to do with the big difference in the scores: I. H. McNair. J. Taylor, W. J. H. Thoniass, J. Hopwood (West End, holders) 26, v. M. H. Morris, L. C. H. Dawson. J. Newton, R. Thomas (Mount Albert, challengers) 8. A comfortable margin enabled the holders of the .Jordan Pins to retain their trophies: J. R. Harlock, G. E. Foote, E. J. Gatland. L. Bray (Onehunga, holders) 25, v. W. Stone, T. G. Harriman, R. G. Speight, T. Pilkington (Te Papapa, challengers) 12. Onehunga were 13 to nil with six heads gone, but very rarely does 13 do a rink much good, and their opponents won the next three heads, besides a run of four heads later on. However, two couples and a four decided the issue and in the end there was still an advantage of thirteen. The game was played at Hillsboro', the holders accepting the accommodation kindly offered by the neighbouring club, owing to their own three greens being taken up with the soldiers' tournament. The same procedure will be followed next Saturday, to meet a rink from Otahuhu in charge of -J. Gardiner. Soldiers at Onehunga. The two-Saturday tournament opened as a brilliant success. Two of the 44 rinks entered failed to answer the roll call, but it did not transpire whether they had fallen in battle or were merely in hospital with the prevailing colds. However, Secretary Cowell had taken the precaution to bring alternative charts, according to whether all turned up, or only 40 or 42, having doubtless been warned by experience in these matters, so it did not take long to alter the draw. By the time President Livingstone had welcomed the great gathering the charts were ready and an early start enabled two rounds of ten heads to be completed before dusk. As it happened, the absence of these rinks was not altogether an inconvenience, for it enabled the president to join in the Edwin Stars game at once, instead of having to go to Hillsboro', the challengers being early advised by telephone to play at Onehunga. Mr. Livingstone remarked on the increased popularity of the tournament and reminded the company that the decision at the annual meeting of the club' was unanimous in giving up the whole of the three greens to the soldiers, so he hoped that they would make it an annual reunion. At the tea adjournment Mr. F. A*' Hosking, chairman of the committee elected by the soldiers, took charge of the proceedings and cordially thanked the members of the club for standing out for two Saturdays, which he described as most generous. He regretted the absence of Mr. Yella, who left for Sydney the previous day on a brief business trip, for lie had been most active in promoting these functions, and was donating half the prizes, the club giving the rest. He had been hoping to welcome the Hon. William Perry, M.L.C., president of the New Zealand R.S.A.. but Mr. Perry had telegraphed on Thursday night that unexpected circumstances prevented him from attending. However, they had with them Sir George Richardson, patron of the Auckland R.S.A. Sir George expressed his pleasure at again joining in this reunion. He enjoyed a game himself an<l was delighted to see the increasing number of returned soldiers who had taken to bowls. Mr. S. P. Day, vice-president of the Auckland District R.S.A., congratulated the soldiers on working up such a fine gathering and hoped that in their happiness they would not forget their old comrades who were in distress. Mr. A. E. Whitten, president of the Auckland Bowling Centre, who was attended bv two aides-de-camp, Messrs. George Gladding and Arthur Dignan, offered official congratulations and good wishes for lonp; life to enjoy the respite which they 60 well deserved after all their gallant work for their country. Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P.. introduced by the chairman as our High Commis-sioner-elect, jocularly endeavoured to carry out Mr. Hosking's "instructions" to tell us in two minutes what he was going to do for us when he got to London, flow-ever, he thought it largely depended on what the soldiers intended to do for themselves and he hoped that improved conditions would help them to that end. The grounds were well decorated with military emblems arranged by Mr. J. K. Ross. A mounted machine gun threatened them just inside the gate, each scoring board was headed with the name of some great battle, a familiar door was labelled "canteen," while -a large notice board gave a reminder that the adjoining croquet lawns were "No man's land."
