WHITE GLOVES.

CRIME LESSENING IN FIJI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, June 15. "I think the absence of serious crime, especially that type which used to be so common — the crime passionel — has shown a remarkable decrease, which points to a happy augury for the future of the colony," said the acting-Attorney-General, when he presented the actingChief Justice with the customary pair of white gloves to mark the fact that there were no eases on the list for the criminal sessions last week. In replying, his Honor said that Fiji had to be congratulated 011 the absence of serious crime, which might be due to several causes, to the efficient policing of the district and partly to the prosperity which Fiji is enjoying. "I think," he added, "it is generally admitted that in prosperous times, when there is work for all, there is a diminution in crime." Both Chief Justice and AttorneyGeneral made their adieux to the Court, the former, who will soon take up his work as Attorney-General owing to the arrival of the new Chief Justice, and the latter, who has been elevated to a senior position in Zanzibar.
