NEW WHARF NEEDED.

WHANG ARE I HEADS TRADE. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. Called upon to decide whether the seaborne traffic to Whangarei Heads justified the expenditure necessary to maintain or renew one or both of the existing wharves which for the past 60 years have served the district, the Whangarei Harbour Board yesterday decided to inspect the wharf at Urquhart's Bay. Members travelled by launch to the bay, where the position was discussed with a number fo settlers, headed by Mr. C. Davidson, chairman of the Ratepayers' Association.. The chairman, Mr. J. A. Finlayson, questioned whether the sea-borne trade from the district warranted the provision of even one wharf, but said the board admitted that there was a responsibility to settlers. The board decided that it would build and maintain only one wharf in the Whangarei Heads district, and that should be at Urquhart's Bay. Provided the settlers Secured a £300 Government grant, the board was prepared to subsidise up to an equal amount.
