LEG AMPUTATED.
TERRIBLE INJURIES. RAILWAY YARD ACCIDENT. Shocking injuries were received by Mr. William Edward Kane this morning when a railway truck crushed his right leg, necessitating its amputation. The accident occurred in the yards at the Auckland railway station. Mr. Kane, who lives at 180, Green Lane Koad, One Tree Hill, is married and has two children. He is employed by the New Zealand Railways Department as a fireman. While he was at work loading a truck at about 9.30, another truck, which was being shunted, struck him from behind, terribly lacerating the right leg and causing several compound fractures. A St. John ambulance was quickly called, and Sir. Kane was removed to the Auckland Hospital, where the leg was amputated. The operation proved satisfactory. Much sympathy was extended to Mr. Kane by his fellow workers, who described him as a fine type of man.
