AMALGAMATION.
MORE FAVOUR SHOWN. HINT AT LEGISLATION. «CONCRETE PROPOSALS." A keen advocate- of the amalgamation of local -bodies —where that step may be taken for the benefit of the people of the districts concerned and the Dominion as a whole —-the Minister of Internal Affaire, the Hon. W. E. Parry, stated this morning that in many parts of both islands there was now a splendid feeling existing„among the people for tbe amalgamation of bodies, enabling them to accomplish better work than under present separate administration.
"All 111 a very short time," Mr. Parry said, "there lias been noticeable a remarkable agreement in the proposed merging plans. This is strikingly evident from the published statements in the Press and from the advice I receive by mail. The people of many districts seem to be sinking their local differences and are looking at the proposals from a national viewpoint, which is good to recognise. It should not be icng before matters are put into practical effect."
It is more than likely that the Legislature will be asked before the session ends to deal with a bill providing easier powers than now exist to brinjj about the amalgamation of local bodies. "I hope that shortly I will.be able," added ALr. Parry, "to submit concrete proposals to Cabinet for consideration."
