GOLF TITLE.

COTTON IN THE LEAD. Sensational, Play by Canadian Professional. FERRIER-PERRY IN DANGER. United Press Association. —Copyright. (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 24. In the British open golf tournament 107 players out of 203 qualified for the championship, with scores of 155 or better. * Hector Thomson, amateur champion, with a score of 08 in the second round, at Wallasey, established an amateur course record. He beat the American, von Elm's 71, in the championship of 1931. Ferrier (77) was definitely in the danger-zone when lie set out at Wallasey for liis second round. He played some holes perfectly, but had lapses at others. His figures out were:—4, 4, 4, 3, 4, 3, 4, 4, (j (30). He was out of touch with his putter on the homeward journey, his figures being: 4, 3, 5, 5, 4, 5, o, 4, 0 (41)'. Hodsou's score to-day included one for the hole at the fourth, 105 yards. Sarazen played perfect golf until the eighteenth, where he "duffed" a chipshot. Towards the end of the day a sensation was caused by a magnificent round at Hoylake by Smithers. a Canadian. He came to England and sometimes caddied for, and played with, John Baillieu (Melbourne). Smithers entered the championship as an unattached professional. At the sixteenth he needed three fours to displace Cotton in the lead, but was unlucky with his putting, taking three fives.

Cotton again played with machinelike accuracy. He had a remarkable outward run of 34, his figures beinsr: 4, 4, 4, 3, 4, 3, 4, 4, 4.

Alfred Perry (the title-holder) narrowly qualified. He had an indifferent round to-day. takinrr six at one hole, where he gashed a ball playing from a bunker. The marker refused permission to replace the damaged ball on the green. ,

TENNIS AT WIMBLEDON

Stedman and Malfroy Win Second Singles. PERRY PLAYS SIAMESE. (Received 11 n.m.) ■LONDON, June 24. Because the Siamese, Chartikavanij, is the most weird exponent of the followthrough, a big crowd gathered at Wimbledon to see him play Perry. The Siamese seems to have oceans of time to make a stroke, with a graceful sweeping rythvm, but he was no match for Perry's strategy. Crawford did not appreciate the slow tempo of Hare's game, but he served and smashed brilliantly. Some of Hare's recoveries were amazing, but the Australian, with leisurely grace, won in straight sets.

Quist had a full gallery against the Swiss, Ellmer. The former was a long time finding a length, while Ellmer drove consistently to the baseline. Quist was handicapped by a blistered hand. Later he exploited his opponent's backhand and won with something in hand.

Sproule put up a great fight against Austin, but the Englishman was too consistent in the hard driving rallies.

McGrath had a ding-dong fight with the Frenchman, Landry. The Australian's double-backhand shots functioned well after the first set, and his fine placements to Landry's backhand corner gave him the match. Results:—
