FORTNIGHT ON EGGS.
MENU IN THE DESERT. Four men stranded in a wild spot in Central Australia had to live on nothing but eggs for 14 days! Eric Miller, desert driver of the Royal Mail, was speeding across a remote stretch of country in the back of beyond in his IA-ton. lorry. With him, as passengers, were Messrs. G. Birt, W. Wesley and J. Redmond. In the lorry was the mail and several crates of eggs. Suddenly the lorry stopped. It had run into a bog. 'Nothing that the united efforts of the four men could do would get it out again. "We've got some eggs, any way," said Miller. So, as they waited for some passing motorists, they each had an egg. But they went on waiting in vain. The days passed. The egg 3 slowly disappeared. Every possible variety of cooking them was tried by Miller, self-appointed chef of the stranded party. A fortnight of egg diet was enough for Miller's companions. "Miller," cried one of them, "we're going to walk for help. We- rcckon it's only 20 miles to the nearest house. We feel we ought to make a bold bid for freedom . . ." Miller was found still gallantly guarding the bogged lorry. Near it was a mound of egg shells. "There are 252 of them," said Miller. They got his lorry out of the bog and took him bifck to civilisation.
