NEW CHAIRMAN.
HOSPITAL BOARD. MR. W. WALLACE DEFEATED. REV. W. C. WOOD SUCCEEDS. After 18 years as chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, Mr. William Wallace was defeated for the position at the annual meeting of the board to-day. The Rev. W. C. Wood was elected chairman by six votes to five. Mr. Wood has been chairman of the relief committee of the board.
When the ballot was taken to-day Mr. Wallace was nominated by Mr. E. H. Potter and seconded by Sir. G. T. Parvin. Mr. Wood was nominated by Dr. E. B. Gunson, and seconded by Mr. J. WaddelL On taking the chair Mr. AVood expressed his surprise at liis election and his regret that Mr. Wallace had been
beaten. It was a difficult position for him, lie said, as he had accepted nomination only after some persuasion and with no idea that he would 11 elected. In thanking the members for the honour conferred upon him, Mr. Wood said he would be less than human if lie did not feel grateful, but he would not be human if he did not feel that his elevation to the chair meant the loss of a position held by Mr. Wallace over a long period of years. He felt sure he could count 011 the loyal support of the whole of the members, and he. himself would make every effort to discharge hit? duties faithfully and well. Mr. Wallace has been a member of the Auckland Hospital Board since IS>ll. During his term as chairman important developments have been carried out at the hospital. He also served on the Auckland Harbour Board for 13 -years, but retired from that body in order to give more time to hospital affairs. Hewas 20 years a member of the Birkenhead Borough Council, with three years as Mayor. In business Mr. Wallace is a land valuer and assessor.
