PAPATOETOE'S STUBBORN FIGHT.

At headquarters the long-awaited clash between Grammar Old Boys and Papatoe toe resulted "in u 4 to 1 victory tor Grammar. Playing a hard game throughout, play reached a high standard. Body play was too much in evidence for two teams of such calibre, and a series of mishaps, which in most eases could be attributed to over-eagerness on the part ot the i players, marred an otherwise exhilarating contest. Anderson, Grammar's goalie, was the first "casualty." After a melee in the goal mouth lie emerged with his pants split to the hip and had to leave the iftld for replacements. Throughout he played a cool game, and came out to meet the attack with rare judgment/. Jones "was easily the better of the full-backs, and despite two slight Accidents during the game, this player repeatedly got his side out of difficulties. The halves proved very steady, Herriott and Lawry on the wings working very hard, whilst A. Ross, although perhaps not so conspicuous, catered well for his forwards and varied the line of attack. I. Ross, Roughton and Twigden formed the spearhead of the attack, Roughton making several brilliant solo efforts down the centre. Twigden was also in the picture and'concealed his passes well, his stiekwork at times being brilliant. Jerram, on the left wing, played a dashing game, his pace being a decided acquisition, whilst Heath, 011 the right wing, coped well with all that came his way. For Papatoetoe, Airey had a difficult task in goal. The shots which passed him gave him little chance to save, otherwise he played a sterling game. Lnsby outshone • Cocks 111 the full-back position, playing a great defensive game and feeding his forwards with judicious passes. Cocks' excitable nature nearly landed his side in trouble several times, and he was lucky that Twigden did not successfully finalise the penalty bully given against him. Dowling played a great game at centre half, and was ably assisted by Edney, who is certainly a hard worker all the way. With just a little more experience and coaching of the right type both these players should reach greater heights. Of the forwards Chapman and Monteitli were outstanding. The former, on the right wing, made some beautiful runs arid sent across several clever centres, whilst the latter made the most of his opportunities, but usually found the defence too strong. Torbett, at centre, catered well for his line, and although not brilliant, certainly worked hard throughout. Williams' positional play was at times at fault, and Smytheman's one-handed play spoilt several of his chances of success.
