GRAFTON BRIDGE.
INHERENT WEAKNESS. . MAIN GIRDER SPAN. The fact that an inherent weakness had become evident in one of the main girder spans of the Grafton Bridge and that definite action] had become necessary was referred to by the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, a* a meeting of the Auckland City Council last evening. "Further examination and stress analyses revealed that .the weakness was serious," said Mr. Davis. Temporary' steel trusses were erected on the deck at either side of the roadway over the central pier at the eastern end so as to support the more defective, portions of the structure. Aft«r an exhaustive investigation remedial measures have now bepn recommended by the city engineer. Necessarily, they involve extensive and costly reconstruction. When application is made for the loan the approval of tlie proposal of the engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department will be required. In order to avoid delay details of the scheme have already been submitted to Wellington. This question has been constantly before the works committee, the chairman of which, Mr. Atliur Kosser, is devoting special attention to it."
