APPRECIATION.
I MR, S. IRWIN CROOKES. j lis WORK FOR UNIVERSITY. Appreciation of the services to the Auckland University College of Mr. S. Irwin Crookes, who is retiring from the council, was expressed yesterday by the president of the council, Mr, T. U. Wells. Mr. Crookes' term of office expires at the end of this month. He represented the .members of the gerferal assembly resident in the Auckland provincial district, and did not seek reelection. Yesterday was his last meeting as a member of the council. ill-. Wells said that Mr. Crookes M been a most valuable member of the council, and if the college did retain the department of engineering, it would be largely due to the efforts of Mr. Crookes. Further, he had always been ready for the council to avail itself of his engineering and building knowledge. The chairman also referred to the fact that two of Mr. Crookes' sons were members of the college staff, and both in the architecture department. One was acting-professor and one was a lecturer. Mr. Crookes' daughter was also a scholar in botany. Mr. Crookes replied briefly, thanking the chairman and council members for what had been said. He added that in some respects his connection with the college had btvn unique. During the war he had been a lecturer, while it was true that liis children held the position specified. The retiring member has been on the council since 1930, and also for a period before that time. He did not seek reelection, and as there was only one nomination, that of the Hon. Bernard Martin, M.L.C.. Mr. Martin was declared elected on the day that nominations closed. May 29.
