CARDINAL NEWMAN. 1801. 1890. JUNE 16, 1833, "LEAD, KINDLY LIGHT" COMPOSED.
Newman was born in London on February 21, 1801. His father was a banker. In 183 2 he was in Sicily. Leaving ' : there in an orange boat
bound for Marseilles, the vessel lay becalmed in the Straits of Bonifacio, and it was there he wrote his famous hymn, "Lead, Kindly Light." During the following year he became a leader of the Tractarian movement. Ten years later he resigned the vicarage of St. Mary's, which he had held since 1828. On 9th October, 1845, he was received into the communion of the Roman' Catholic Church. "Apologia Pro Vita Sua" was issued as the result of public correspondence with Charles Kingsley. "The Dream of Gerontius" was written in 1865. He was made a Cardinal by Leo XIII., 1879.
