SWEET PEAS WILL NEED PROTECTION.
The young sweet peas from the autumn sowing outdoors are quite hardy enough to withstand the cold and frosts, lint unless they are shielded against the biting winds, losses will be many. The best protection is branches pressed into the soil alongside the row to form a breakwhul. Excessive dampness in winter is another fruitful source of trouble, and it will be more than ever necessary to keep tlio soil well stirred so that surplus moisture can drain away. A good plan in a dam]) garden is to lioe up a little soil around the stem of each seedling, so that the. rain will run off the sides of the little mound instead of soaking straight down to the roots, or bettor still, before sowing or planting to draw the soil into a ridge, and plant or sow oil that.
