WHAT MAKES SHIPS MOVE?—When the smart new ship enters port we admire her lines, read about her luxurious quarters, hear about her speed. But, as any engineer will tell you, it is her engines thai are really important. Few landsmen ever see them, but here are some: (1) The starting platform in a iurbo-electrlcship: InlhisShip (the Strathnaver) steam is generated by water-tube boilers burning oil fuel The propelling machinery consists of two sets of turbo-alternators, which supply current to two propulsion motors. (2) In the engine room of the Rangitala, showing the controls for the port engine. (3) For contrast: The man, the coal and the furnace. (4) Boiler room of ihe Remuera. There are five single-ended boilers, healed by twenty oil furnaces.
