LOOSE COVERS

When loose covers on chairs or chesterfields need repairing on the arms it is often difficult to match the chintz or cretonne. Even if a spare length has been kept for the purpose the new material is apt to look too fresh in contrast to the old. If the covers have been made with generously gathered frills it may be possible to take the frills right off, cut a piece from the end of each, and then replace them, less fully gathered. The spare pieces obtained in this way will match far better than new material. If no frills are available it may be worth while to pick out the most worn cover of all, or one belonging to a small chair, and cut it up to repair the others. The od»l chair should then be recovered in some material that tones well with the old covers and does not make tlieni look faded. v 1
