WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

OHAKUNE. There was a large attendance of members at the June meeting of the WomonV Institute, when remits to the conference were discussed. The competition for peggy squares was won by Mrs. Fitz- - gerald, who presented 50 squares. The toffee competition was also won by Mrs. Fitzgerald. A splendid selection of home-made sweets filled the trading ( table, and found a ready sale. Folkdancing, under the direction of Miss J Hindj filled the social hour. WAITOA. I A pleasant afternoon was spent by the Women's Institute, held in the . Waitoa Hall this week. A humorous reading read by Miss E. Arnold was greatly appreciated, followed by two charades, acted by Miss E. Arnold and M rs. H. Kerr. The competition, the best article made from a 501b flour bag, was won by Mrs. Wood. BROWN'S BAY. The monthly meeting of the Brown's Bay Women's Institute was well attended and after the usual routine of business there was a demonstration of cookery by electric stove. The cakes and scones made were all presented to be sold for the funds of the institute. The thrift table was well stocked and good business done. MATAMATA. At the June meeting Mrs. Leadbeater presided over a good attendance. Rev. G. F. W. Oulds gave a talk on the Maori race, 'touching on their origin and many customs. A competition for the greatest number of articles in a match box was won by Mrs. Hemslev with 101 articles, and a competition for the best pair of slippers made from a felt hat was won by Mrs. J. E. Sorrenson, Mrs C'. Taylor second, Mrs. Lowry third. The roll call was "The Best Dinner on Institute Night." A demonstration of woolwork* given by Miss Donnelly was much appreciated. , MANGAWEKA. There was a large attendance at the June meeting when Mrs. Ginnane presided. All present stood for a moment in silence in memory of a late member, Mrs. Gardner. It was decided to cooperate with the members of the local Oddfellows' Lodge in holding a series of card evenings, proceeds to be used for piano repairs. A report on the recent drama competition was given, members being very interested in the judge's remarks and report. The Mangaweka team, Mrs: Kirkby and Misses P. Weston and A. Gardner, were congratulated on their win, -and as the cup presented by tfte Rangiwahia Institute, has now been won outright, it was decided to hold a drama competition locally and invite neighbouring institutes to compete for this trophy. Mrs. Ginnane (president) was appointed delegate to the conference at Duuedin in July. Mrs. W. H. Billinghurst was announced the winner of the potato competition, with 871b from her three tubers. The points competition, thrift articles, was won by Mrs. Sutherland (most useful section), and Miss R. Oulsriam (most ornamental.) Mr. Dawkins gave a talk on pruning and grafting fruit. '
