SATISFACTION.

COUNCIL OPINION.

"SHOULD GO WHOLE WAY." CRITICISM BY MEMBERS. "The report is as favourable as one could expect, and is a hundred per cent endorsement of the proposals submitted by the council," remarked the chairman of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, at yesterday's meeting when the report of the executive commission of agriculture was discussed. "While the report gives practically munieipalisation powers to the council in the nature of a halfway scheme it leaves the carrying out of the services, which are really on a munieipalisation system, in the hands of those now engaged in the industry," Mr. Hutchison added. "We can thus organise the industry for the benefit of consumers without additional cost to the consumer, as is the case under the complete munieipalisation system in Wellington." Mr. Hutchison, in outlining the salient features of the report, mentioned that there was a finding against the evidence of those who had tried to stop consolidation and pooling. Referring to the proposed appeals tribunal he said that would be more satisfactory than the Magistrate's Court. Mr. J. S. Montgomerie said the council should take the long step toward munieipalisation as in any scheme of consolidation finance must be provided. Mr. Hutchison then explained that under the council's system the vendors had to find the money for distribution until the council took over.

Mr. A. C. Trousdale said that, as a producers' representative, he was disappointed. 110 hoped the council would go the whole Vay and distribute the milk, as well as purchase'it. The council should be the owner of the milk from tlio producer to the consumer and should have its own men. Mr. I. Massey expressed the view that they could not" wifili for anything better from tho vendors' point of view. Mr. I. .T. Goldstiiits said that, as a consumers' representative, lie had sought to reduce the price to the consumer and at the same time to give an adequate return to the vendor. He was fully satisfied with the report and he hoped that, as a result, the price could be reduced. After other members had expressed satisfaction with the report it was decided, on the motion of Mr. Goldstine, to place on record the council's appreciation of the services of the commission. It was also decided to circulate copies of the report to the producers and vendors.
