THE ROAD TO GISBORNE.
67, Lytton Road, Gisborne. Dear Tinkerbell, — Have you ever had the pleasure of travelling through the Waioeka Gorge? If you haven't, I shall try and describe to you the beautiful wild bush, the daehing foam and the calm water, and a winding road, cut cleverly by the persevering roadman. It is situated between two rather small insignificant towns, Gieborne and Opotiki. Although only 30 miles' in length it holds all the beauties of Nature. I have been through six times and love every chain of the enthralling journey. The road winds round the rocky hills and below the river, even longer than the gorge, follows it. On one side of your path, a high wall of rock covered with moss, feme and trees towers above, and on the other a delicious cool, tempting river, sometimes dashes over huge boulders, and then, ae if to rest itself, lies still, only reflecting shadows and quenching the thirst of beautiful ferns which hang in the water. Ah! but after a storm or even heavy rain, the gorge is a pitiful sight. The road, muddy and slippery, makes a difficult passage for motorists, and slips often block the way for hours. Numerous creeks forded quite easily before scoop out their shallow beds and a car crossing experiences great difficulty. A changed yellow, rushing river adds to the distasteful gloom, and waterfalls po,ur down in unceasing torrents. Now, Tinkerbell, Waioeka Gorge is totally different as seen by different people, but I think the ferns and trees are beyond description. Youre sincerely, Joyce Smith.
